“Touch My Swag, Wish You Could” - Victoria Monét Graced the Spotlight at LoveLoud DC [October 2023]
Jaws dropped at The Anthem in the District of Columbia this week as the stunning Victoria Monét took the stage as headliner of LoveLoud DC on Tuesday, October 17, 2023. Crowds waited with bated breath to chant her lyrics, “On my mama, on my hood, I look fly, I look good.” After waiting and enjoying the full opening lineup, the audience was not disappointed by the thunderous performance that arrived right on time.
Ms. Monét was preceded by several cause-driven acts that thoughtfully weaved their missions into their stage performances and short speeches. We heard from Lindsey Stirling, David Archuleta, Allison Russell, Dan Reynolds, and Tyler Glenn. The crowd was playfully honest in critiquing what was seen on stage. A mixture of emotions came throughout the show that was both laughably refreshing and/or gently brutal depending on the moment. With an overarching theme of granting individuals the peace to love whoever they choose, all in all, the audience was one filled with love and eagerness for a good time.
As expected, the final hour of the event was dedicated to Victoria Monét, known for popular tracks such as “Dive”, “Moment”, “Party Girls”, and the summer 2023 viral hit, “On My Mama”. We knew Ms. Monét was on her way to the stage when camera flashes went off backstage and the stage crew began bringing out lush green plants for atmosphere. Minutes later, the host of the event resurfaced to deliver a riveting introduction for the showstopper, Victoria Monét.
Her entry was mysterious and lovely. She first appeared draped in a brown rope and a shiny silver jaguar mask that suited the theme of her current audio project titled, Jaguar II. It was not long after that the mask disappeared and she snatched the rope apart to reveal a striking three piece outfit containing a sparkling bralette, skirt, and bikini-type bottom that showed off one hip. She glistened from head to toe in full glam makeup and long flowy blonde hair. The audience echoed with comments about her striking beauty. It was not long until two dancers appeared by her side dressed similar to her. Each dancer’s hair varied slightly in color, yet it all worked so cohesively.
Ms. Monét cycled through her top hits from Jaguar II, played homage to some greats before her, and even performed some of her songs that only early fans would know. Some particularly memorable moments, in no particular order, included:
The outfit-change for “Cadillac (A Pimp’s Anthem)” where she donned a long black sparking pin-striped coat, cane, and fedora hat combo that was reminiscent of Janet Jackson’s “I Get So Lonely” music video.
Her rendition of “Stop (Askin’ Me 4Shyt)”, was much needed in that she made some of her demands known with her dancers right beside her. One of which included requesting that the world stop being gay, bi, and trans-phobic.
Her performance of “Smoke”, where we saw Ms. Monét light up on stage.
“Friend U Can Keep” was particularly sultry and shocking with the sensual interplay between she and her two female dancers.
Finally, “On My Mama” was as amazing as expected with her performance of the swag-filled, viral choreography by Sean Bankhead.
When it was time to unleash her undeniable stage presence, Ms. Monét did not disappoint. Borrowing from the best performance elements coined by the greats before her, the overall performance exuded beauty, energy, and professionalism. Sky's the limit for Victoria Monét who shortly after this event was announced as a performer for Howard University’s popular Homecoming Weekend. Ms. Monét will make another stop in DC to grace the HU Yard this weekend.
